The journalistic style of these American magnates played a decisive role in the popular appeal of newspapers: this is the new journalism, that of the tabloids, and Hearst’s “Yellow Journalism.” His figure inspired Orson Wells’s film “Citizen Kane,” characterized by sensationalism and the presence of human-interest stories of a tabloid nature, which led to the emergence of mass journalism. The third generation is that of responsible journalism, that of counter-information, investigation and denunciation, which shakes people’s passions and consciences. A different kind of journalism, that of Bernstein, Capa, Woodward, characterized by the conflict between the role of instrument and guarantor of the public right to information and the logic of profit, sought at all costs by the ever more powerful press magnates. At the end of the 20th century, the impetuous technological development, which also affected communications, influenced society to the point of changing its conception of time and space; in economic terms, any economic choice adopted in any part of the world will from now on involve the entire planet. This process is called “globalization” and also concerns the universe of publishing; thus the birth of the fourth generation of journalism, global journalism, of world communications, was sanctioned.
