Online Newspapers. Technology and Information: Newspapers from the 19th Century to Today

Newspapers in the Western World: In the 19th century, Europe was swept by liberal revolutions originating from the Enlightenment movement, which resulted from the exaltation of secular ideas and national and scientific principles with a view to a progressive and total emancipation of the man of darkness in which, according to the Enlightenment thinkers, he would be held by religious oppression: Liberty, Equality, Fraternity or brotherhood, Human Rights, Science, Rational Thought, Political Autonomy and the Secularity of the State were the new inspiring principles of man. Social and economic changes created favorable conditions for the growth of newspapers with wider circulation in England. The Stamp Act of 1712, together with the Education Act, contributed to the development of mass-market newspapers, and the expansion of the public’s demand for news was reflected in the tendency towards the creation of large companies and the commercialization that would characterize the newspaper industry. The French Revolution marked a milestone in the history of the press with the approval of the “Declaration of the Rights of Man,” proclaimed on August 26, 1789, which gave an extraordinary boost to journalism. All the Gazettes reported the decisions of the National Assembly and the Constituent Assembly and published revolutionary documents: from the Tennis Court document that abolished the feudal regime, to the “Declaration of the Rights of Man,” from the formation of political clubs including the Jacobins, to the proclamation of the new Constitution. In the USA, freedom of communication and thought was affirmed two years later by the First Amendment to the American Constitution: here too, the importance of political journalism in the formation of public opinion was reaffirmed. The economic organization of the press in Europe and the USA was conditioned by two essential elements: the first was the advent of advertising, which allowed for the financing of a cheap popular press; The second is the development of periodical newspaper chains based on a concentrated media ownership model that saw the emergence of “press barons” with the application of economies of scale in the publishing sector.
